Also known as paint putty, wall putty is usually used before you paint your walls as it helps to better conceal cracks and holes that might otherwise prevent the smooth application of wall paint. Depending on the surface, 1-2 coats of paint putty may need to be applied and sanded to prepare the surface for the new paint.

Types of wall putty

There are two types of wall putty.

Cement wall putty.

Cement based putties or cement putties are mainly used to repair concrete and masonry surfaces. They are supplied in powder form and need to be mixed with water before use. The consistency should be that of peanut butter (i.e. not too runny or too thick). You will then need to apply it with a putty knife and let it dry for about a day before painting the walls.

Acrylic wall putty.

Acrylic-based putties or acrylic putties are available for plaster and plasterboard surfaces and are supplied in ready-to-use or powder form. They usually have a smooth and tintable surface, so you can get the same colour as wall paint. The only drawback is that they are not as durable as cement putty and may chip or crack over time.

All of these wall putties have their own unique advantages that make them more suitable for certain applications. For example, cement-based putties tend to form a harder surface than other types when they dry. On the other hand, acrylic latex-based putties are known for their ease of application and quick drying.

How do I apply wall putty?

Before we learn how to apply wall putty, choose and determine which putty is best for your walls. The following is a step-by-step guide on how to apply wall putty correctly.

Firstly, you need to determine whether your surface is plaster or plasterboard. If it is either of these two surfaces, then acrylic putty is best for you.

Next, wash and clean the area. You should remove any loose debris from the area before applying the wall putty.

Then properly mix and apply the wall care putty to ensure the best results. Depending on the type of material you are using (powder/off-the-shelf), mix it according to its instructions and apply it in one direction with a wide flat-bladed knife. For the powder types, let them stand for at least 24 hours so that they harden and are ready for painting.

Once you have prepared the wall, you can use a sponge or brush to apply the paint on top. Paint putty is an essential step in creating the perfect wall finish. By using the right type of putty and following these simple steps, you can ensure that your walls look as good as new!
